There's a real talent to singing pitch-perfect music without a band. That's why NBC created the new reality show "The Sing-Off."
The show debuts on Dec. 14 and it will star eight a cappella groups from around the country. There's a local buzz surrounding "The Sing-Off" because Boulder's Face is one of those acts.
Face has a talent for capturing all the energy of a contemporary rock concert via its a cappella shows. The band always packs Colorado venues and the TV event is a golden opportunity to show off its vocal skills.
"'The Sing-Off' will be really competitive, but we're the only group that styles itself as more of a rock band," beatbox vocalist Mark Megibow said last week. "We're going to be doing the best we can and I think we have a really good shot."
Face should have no problem performing in front of celebrity judge Ben Folds and "Sing-Off" host Nick Lachey. The Boulder band has played for enthusiastic full houses at the Boulder Theater and Nissi's.
"The highlight of our career has been selling out local clubs and being really embraced by our fans," Megibow said. "We've also had opportunities to travel and play places like Las Vegas. We're going to start to do more traveling."
Face may be doing a lot of traveling after "The Sing-Off" airs.
The Boulder band auditioned for the show in September. However, a strange twist of fate almost cancelled Face's chances of being on air.
Face missed its plane and the band members debated about showing up for the tryouts. Fortunately, the band made the right decision.
"We missed our flight that day, so we had a conversation at the airport about what we should do. Was this a sign?" Megibow said. "We took a democratic vote and ended up buying six more tickets to fly to the audition.
"We felt pretty good about how we did at the auditions. It was out of our hands at that point, so we went home."
The a cappella Gods must've been happy, because Face became one of eight finalists for "The Sing-Off."
"We freaked out when we got the news," Megibow said. "It was really a momentous occasion. I still remember the date and time we got the news -- Friday, Oct. 16, at 2 p.m.
"We're going out to film some episodes, but the Dec. 21 finale will be live. The exposure alone has the potential of generating millions of new Face fans."
Megibow said Face fans already have been contacting the band.
That's a good thing, because those fans will need to dial in their votes for part of the competition.
"Everyone in town knew there was something brewing, because we cancelled our December schedule. We never do that," Megibow said. "Now we're asking everyone to vote early and vote often.
"'The Sing-Off' definitely will show people everything that a cappella can be."
Face fans are already planning local viewing parties for "The Sing-Off." Nissi's is hosting a Dec. 14 event and the free tickets were gone in 24 hours.
Face has the support of local fans and now the band's ready to face America.
"'The Sing-Off' is a great opportunity to show off some unknown artists," Megibow said. "There's a lot of great talent out there, and shows like this encourage people to never give up on their music.
"We'd like to win, so we can take care of our families and do what we love to do."
