Former University of Colorado basketball great Leason Horton "Pete" McCloud died Monday at the Newton Medical Center in Kansas. He was 94.
McCloud is one of CU's eight All-Americans (1942) in men's basketball. He played from 1939-42 under head coach Forrest "Frosty" Cox.
McCloud and the Buffs won the NIT Championship in 1940 by defeating Duquesne 51-40. The Buffs also played in the NCAA Tournament that year and finished fourth overall.
He was a co-captain on the 1940-41 Buffs and was named the Mountain States Conference Most Outstanding Player while leading the league in scoring.
During his senior season (1941-42), McCloud was the leading scorer for the Big Seven champion Buffs. He scored 19 points in a NCAA Tournament win against Kansas. His efforts that season garnered McCloud the All-American honor.
After his CU career, McCloud served in the Army Air Force from 1943 to 1946 during World War II.
