Gusting winds and quickly thawing snow became just two more hurdles to get over Friday, for racers braving the elements -- and a highly competitive field of contestants -- taking part in the Cyclocross National Championships at Boulder's Valmont Bike Park.

The five-day series of down and dirty cyclocross races were to continue at the park Saturday and Sunday, accompanied by a cycling expo, beer garden and a variety of food vendors.

The action will continue today with seven events getting underway between 9 a.m., including two female collegiate races and the under 23 men's race. Sunday will include several high-profile contests including the female and male elite races, which begin at 1:30 and 2:45 p.m. respectively.

Attendance at the championships is free.

Because parking is limited, organizers encourage those planning to attend not to arrive by car -- but suggest that traveling there by bicycle would probably be a fitting mode of transporation.
