A day after dropping its season opener to Northwestern in an extremely close match, the Colorado volleyball team bounced back to knock off the tournament host and Presbyterian College in the Buffs' final two contests at the Northern Illinois Invitational.
Playing in another nail-bitter to open the day, CU was able to come out on top of a five-setter by knocking off the Wildcats (26-28, 25-18, 25-20, 21-25, 15-12). Colorado then closed out its time at the tournament with a sweep of Presbyterian.
The day's early match was close throughout, but the Buffs were able to best the 'Cats thanks in part to Taylor Simpson, who led CU with 23 kills. Joslyn Hayes and Kelsey English each contributed eight kills of their own to the cause, and Nicole Edelman added 46 assists in guiding CU to the win.
After going up 2-1 entering the fourth set, the Buffs dropped that frame and went down 8-2 to begin the fifth. But rather than folding, CU ran off six straight points and later took the lead at 13-12. A NIU error was then followed by a Stephanie Shadley ace to close out the match.
Simpson was once again a powerhouse in the second match against PC, tallying 13 kills. Anna Pfefferle and Hayes also impressed, notching eight kills each. Edelman added two kills and 32 assists in the match, after which she and Simpson were named to the NIU Invitational All-Tournament Team.
Colorado returns home to prepare for more tournament play, as the Buffs will host the Omni Hotels Colorado Volleyball Classic at the Coors Events Center Sept. 5-6.
