Rockies 6, A's 3 Monday at Salt River Fields, Scottsdale, Ariz.
On the mound: Jon Gray was excellent for his first three innings, but he faltered a bit in the fourth, losing sharp command on his breaking pitches. Gray allowed five hits and two earned runs, struck out four, walked none and needed 71 pitches. Gray's Cactus League ERA is 2.13 after 14 ⅔ innings. He's whiffed 14 and walked only one. ... Left-hander Jake McGee continues to struggle; he gave up a triple and a double in the A's one-run sixth, but his fastball did hit 96 mph. ... Right-hander Carlos Estevez still has options, but he's pressing to make the roster. He pitched 1 ⅔ innings, allowing no runs and one hit while striking out three.
At the plate: Ian Desmond (2-for-3) stroked a three-run homer to right-center off Oakland lefty Brett Anderson in the fourth, putting Colorado ahead 3-2. It was Desmond's second dinger of spring and he's batting .278 (5-for-18). ... Noel Cuevas' first home run, a two-run laser to left, put Colorado ahead 5-3 in the eighth.
Worth noting: Colorado closed out the game with a double play started by infield prospect Bret Boswell, who made a terrific diving stop at second and flipped the ball to shortstop Elliot Soto. Soto also added a solo home run in the eighth.
