Cardless ATMs coming soon

Over the next few months, the nation's three biggest banks will start rolling out ATMs that will let customers withdraw currency using their smartphones instead of debit cards.

Michelle Moore, head of digital banking for Bank of America, said the company plans to make cardless ATMs widely available as early as May. Wells Fargo plans to offer cardless access at all ATMs by the end of the year. Most of JPMorgan Chase's ATMs will start offering cardless access sometime in the second half of the year.

Microsoft tool helps ID dog breeds

Microsoft's latest trick: analyzing a photo to identify the dog breed of your canine companion.

The tool lives at what-dog.net and comes as a Web app or download for devices running Apple's iOS. It's the latest in Microsoft's campaign to advertise the potential of machine-learning research. Previous efforts include apps that tried to peg your age, reviewed moustaches and evaluated whether two people looked like twins.

Drones may help battle poaching

South African conservationists now scan live video from a thermal-imaging camera attached to a drone, looking for heat signatures of poachers stalking through the bush to kill rhinos.

The unarmed drone, which resembles a model airplane, flies several miles from a van where an operator toggles a customized video-gaming control, zooming and swiveling the craft's camera.
