The operator of the Colorado Athletic Club is planning to give the newly acquired Flatiron Athletic Club a multimillion-dollar facelift, according to building permits recently issued by the city of Boulder.

Wellbridge Inc., the Denver-based company that runs 19 clubs in seven states, is planning to renovate the interior of the nearly 47,000-square-foot club and to enclose a portion of the existing rooftop to create a 2,400-square-foot aerobic studio.

The project has an initial contractor valuation of more than $2.83 million, according to documents filed with the city.

"It is just time to update the club," Wellbridge owner Ed Williams wrote in an email. "The industry has changed and the club needs to change along with it."

The planned overhaul comes nine months after Wellbridge bought the 30-year-old Flatiron Athletic Club for an undisclosed sum. At that time, officials said they planned to make more than $1 million in upgrades to the club at 505 Thunderbird Drive.

Under the permits approved by the city of Boulder, the interior renovations include new walls and finishes, the addition of an elevator and new exercise areas. The permits also cover electrical, mechanical and plumbing work; parking lot resurfacing and striping; and flood-proofing.

Plans submitted to the city show expanded and reconfigured locker rooms, the addition of a cardiovascular exercise area and spin studio in place of two of the racquetball courts, a new indoor bike parking area, an expanded outdoor play area, and a yoga studio on the second floor.

Williams said the company will also spend $750,000 on new equipment at the club.

Club member Robert Garelick, 51, said he was not aware of the full extent of the modifications planned for the club, but thought the moves would be positive for himself and other members.

Member fees, he said, have not changed since the acquisition.

"It's been good," he said. "Plus, I'm not highly change-averse."

Colorado Athletic Club has operated a facility at 1821 30th St. in Boulder since 2009, and there are seven club locations statewide.
