DETROIT — Where do you go when you've hit rock bottom?
That's a question the Rockies were no doubt asking themselves on the somber plane ride back to Denver after losing 4-0 to the Tigers on Sunday afternoon at Comerica Park.
Lefty Jorge De La Rosa, Colorado's best pitcher, was on the mound Sunday, trying to salvage something from their latest road trip to perdition.
It didn't matter. Not with right-hander Anibal Sanchez pitching for Detroit.
The numbers paint an ugly picture. The Rockies lost for the seventh time in their last eight games. They have lost 18 of their last 20 road games. With 44-67 record, they own the worst record in the National League and are threatening to replace the Texas Rangers for the worst record in the majors. They are on pace to lose 99 games.
Sanchez dominated the Rockies for seven innings, allowing just two hits and striking out 12. He used every pitch in his arsenal - four-seam fastball, cutter, curveball and changeup - to get big swings and big misses. It was the fourth time in his career that Sanchez has struck out 12 or more hitters.
"He commanded all of his pitches," Rockies manager Walt Weiss said of Sanchez. "He commanded everything — balls and strikes."
"He has a four-pitch mix and throws them at any time, so it's tough to follow a pattern if you are a hitter. He throws them all for strikes, and that makes it tough."
Brandon Barnes scratched out a harmless single off Sanchez in the third and Stubbs did the same in the sixth. By the end of the game, the Rockies had a grand total of three hits and struck out 14 times.
Just a few swings of the bat were all the Tigers needed to complete their three-game sweep of Colorado. With two outs in the third, Rajai Davis doubled to left off De La Rosa and then De La Rosa plunked Ian Kinsler. Next, Miguel Cabrera drove in Davis with a single and then Victor Martinez drove everybody home with a three-run home run to left.
"They are tough on everybody," De La Rosa said. "For me, it's the best lineup in the league. With Martinez it was a really good pitch but I think he was looking for it. It was a (cutter) down and in, but I think he was looking for it."
