A s part of my final course for the Technology, Arts & Media minor (and as part of a requirement for, um, life), I've been working on creating my personal portfolio website. But when deciding what to put in my portfolio and how to brand myself, I've come to a horrible realization.
I have too many social media accounts.
People have been telling me this for years -- I've had Facebook since I was 15 -- but I've always fought them off. "You can never have too many accounts!" I would insist. I was always an early adopter of every network to come along, occasionally to some embarrassment (remember Google+?).
But I've adopted some platforms with pride and vigor, which is now starting to kick my ass. I have five Tumblrs. Three YouTube accounts. Two Wordpress and two Twitter accounts.
And I can't keep track of them all.
I've had a hell of a lot of usernames over the years. Like... at least fifteen. Due to its generic nature (thanks, Ma and Pa), nearly all variations of my name have been taken from the beginning of the internet. So I've had to turn to alternatives. From my super embarrassing MySpace username "i_love_me_too" to usernames that only made sense to me, like "ickaickaicka," I've left a messy trail of abandoned usernames all over the internet.
But now, as I work to develop my brand and consolidate my online presence, I still can't remember all of my usernames and corresponding login info. So out of those YouTube channels and blogs and email accounts, most of them are completely stagnant -- but still linked back to me.
I face a big obstacle between now and the end of the semester, before I start applying for post-graduation jobs. And if you're anything like me, you probably do, too.
In the next few weeks, let's be "consolidation buddies." Let's work on deciding which accounts are most important, and which ones can be left by the wayside.
I know closing an account sort of feels like killing your child (or maybe that's just me?). But when you're applying for jobs, it's probably best that they not find your Formspring account from when you were sixteen and anonymous catty messages were all the rage.
And if you absolutely cannot handle deleting your three extra Tumblrs... looks like it's time for a new username.
