A 31-year-old female died at Longmont United Hospital after attempting to rescue a dog that had fallen into the Highland Ditch Tuesday afternoon, according to Cmdr. Heidi Prentup with the Boulder County Sheriff's Office.
Prentup said someone waved down a passerby near 12973 N. 87th St. and said a friend had fallen into the water-filled ditch around 1:40 p.m. The victim was not a resident of the property where the accident occurred but was visiting the home.
The woman's friends pulled her from the swift-moving water north of Longmont and performed CPR before the woman was transported by ambulance to LUH, where she later died, Prentup said. There is no indication of foul play, she said.
The dog was rescued and is doing fine, according to a press release from the Boulder County Sheriff's Office.
Authorities urge residents to use caution around high and fast-moving water caused by spring runoff this time of year, the release stated.
