The Boulder County Sheriff's Office is trying to determine who left two pipe bombs partially buried in Buckingham Park in Lefthand Canyon.

The explosive devices -- which were removed without incident Tuesday afternoon -- were first spotted Monday night.

Sheriff's officials said a fisherman notified them at 7:20 p.m. Monday that he saw two PVC pipes with wires sticking out of the top partially buried in the sand in part of Buckingham Park near the 3-mile marker of Lefthand Canyon west of Old Stage Road.

The fisherman left the area to notify authorities, but was unable to find the location again. After searching the area, sheriff's deputies also were unable to find anything Monday night, but officials discovered the devices when they resumed the search Tuesday morning.

Bomb squad technicians were able to render the devices inoperable after 2 p.m. Tuesday, according to Boulder County sheriff's Cmdr. Heidi Prentup.

Officials are not sure who planted the devices, which were made with PVC piping and fuse ignitions. The incident is currently under investigation.

No evacuations were made during the incident, through there were some precautionary road closures in Lefthand Canyon during the operation.
