The University of Colorado has earned yet another unwelcome ranking: GQ magazine awarded the Boulder campus the No. 10 spot on its list of “America's 25 Douchiest Colleges.”
The men's style magazine published the list online Tuesday, ranking the University of Texas at No. 23, Ohio State at 19, and filling out the top four with Ivy League schools; Brown University claimed the No. 1 spot.
CU senior Mike Sweetenham said he doesn't think the magazine is too far off in its assumptions.
“I think the school's pretty douchey,” Sweetenham said. “I call it more ‘Chad.' The people and their ideals is what makes it douchey.”
The magazine called CU — which in years past has landed high rankings for partying and pot smoking — “home of the Kind-Bud Douche,” where people drive Priuses, own “$400 Telemark skis you're not sure what to do with; bongs made from recycled Nalgene bottles” and have “white-guy dreads.”
The magazine's editors, in introducing the list, write, "The question isn't whether you're a douche bag when you go to college. We were all kind of douche bags when we went to college, if we're going to be honest about it. No, the question for America's youth is: What kind of douche bag do you aspire to be?"
CU freshman Holly Williamson said she thinks the No. 10 ranking is “ridiculous.”
“I just think that people are really active, outdoorsy and into the environment here,” said Williamson, noting that CU garnered just this week landed the top spot on Sierra Magazine's list of “eco-enlightened” schools.
“I think it's awesome,” she said. “That was one of my biggest attractions to CU.”
As a “profile in studentia,” the magazine quoted faux student “Corey Loggins,” who will be a junior “10 years from now”:
“I like cookies. And Cheetos. God, Cheetos are good. Have you ever had a Coke slushie? Hey, have you ever stared at the sun and then closed your eyes and then see all those weird blue rainbows? Man, these mountains are beautiful. Trees scare me. Hey, who are you?”
Williamson said there are always people who will fit the stereotype.
“But just like with any stereotype, a lot of times it's completely wrong,” she said.
