Boulder police are looking for three people who walked out of the Humane Society of Boulder Valley animal shelter earlier this month with a 2-month-old dachshund puppy.

According to police, two men and one woman came into the shelter, at 2323 55th St., about 10 minutes before its 7 p.m. closing on Aug. 12 and asked if they could look at the dogs.

Then, right at closing time, the staff saw a green, four-door sedan speeding out of the parking lot and noticed the puppy was missing.

Images of the three suspects were captured by surveillance equipment that was installed last year after puppies were stolen in two separate break-ins at the shelter. The images were released Wednesday by Boulder police. Humane

Society CEO Lisa Pedersen said the shelter staff has been monitoring CraigsList pet ads and checking with area veterinarians.

“Our only hope is that they really wanted this animal and just couldn't afford it and that they'll provide a good home and not hurt the dog in any way,” Pedersen said.

It would have cost $250 to adopt the puppy. The Humane Society uses a sliding fee scale for adoptions, with pure-bred puppies costing the most. Those fees subsidize the adoption of older dogs with health problems. The average adoption fee is $95.

The two male suspects both are white with brown hair. One was wearing a short-sleeved, striped polo-style shirt and dark pants. The second suspect was wearing a red button-up shirt and tan cargo-style shorts.

The third suspect is a white female with blondish hair pulled back in a ponytail. She was wearing what appears to be a green, short-sleeved T-shirt with white writing on the front and sports shorts.

The puppy's name is Ferris. He is chestnut brown, has floppy ears and was wearing a yellow collar at the time of the theft.

Anyone with information about the suspects or the whereabouts of the puppy is asked to contact Boulder
