The University of Colorado Student Union would like to cordially invite you to a town hall meeting from 5 to 7 p.m. Nov. 16 in the West Dining Room of the University Memorial Center -- in front of Domino's -- to talk about a few important issues on this campus.
The biggest of these issues is the news that we feel was incorrectly reported by many news sources in mid-October. The first of the reports said that CU is considering a campus-wide parking ban for all students. According to the reports, the reasoning for such a ban was because 75 percent of students already walk, bike or use the bus to get to campus.
A sigh of relief came for students at this school when university officials announced that the proposed ban would only be geared toward freshman.
The CU Student Union wants to make it clear to students that there are no talks to implement a campus-wide student parking ban at this university.
However, even a freshman-parking ban is very controversial because it affects future students and our campus. Although a decision by the university on a freshman-parking ban likely is very far off, action is needed now to ensure that we make the best decision for future students.
UCSU tri-executives, legislators and executive staff members and members of the Resident Hall Association will be at the forum to listen to any concerns that you may have and answer any questions that you have from the recent news.
Through this forum, we hope to find a balance between staying faithful to the university's Carbon Neutrality Plan and creating an accessible campus to all students. We would like to also use this opportunity to find out what you think is the best action for this campus so we, as your student government, can make the most informed recommendation to university officials about what the student body population wants.
We understand the need to have an eco-friendly campus, but we also know that students need certain amenities to make the experience at CU as enjoyable as possible. We want what is best for you, the student, and also for future students, so please join us and make this event as productive as possible.
UCSU would also like to talk about the pending campus and system-wide smoking ban. CU's Anschutz Medical Campus already has a smoking ban and we would like to share how that has gone for them and as well, address any concerns you might have about it.
Please bring any other concerns or questions you have to the forum. UCSU is more than happy to hear your comments or concerns at any time, so if you can't make it, don't feel as if this is a one-time thing.
Also, we can always be reached on our UCSU Web site, where you can post any questions you have at anytime by accessing our FAQ page at www-ucsu.colorado.edu/home/interact_read.cfm.
You can also stop by our offices, located on the first floor of the UMC in Room 125.
We are here to serve you because this is your school and your student government. Let us represent your voice.
Jason Gonzales is the director of media relations for the University of Colorado Student Union.
