I just want you to know how much I love you. You are the most amazing place I have ever lived in, and that's saying a lot because I've moved over 30 times in my lifespan. However, you just have that unique mix of nature and funkiness that makes you extra special.
Because I am so in love with you, I feel I must warn you that 11,680 acres of open space are currently targeted for drilling and fracking and that 192 oil and gas wells will be granted permits this spring.
I don't understand why this is happening when Boulder already let it be known in 2012 that we want no part of fracking and fracking has been repeatedly proven to cause leukemia, cancer, respiratory disease, etc. If those reasons aren't enough, fracking not only threatens human lives, but those of wildlife and of course the Earth itself. If this deal goes through, our water sources will be contaminated, as will our air from the oil and gas wells. Such a horror would be a slow massacre, don't you think?
Boulder County has already invested over $100 million dollars to manage and maintain open space. It's taken our city years to cultivate this preservation, and I, for one, would feel utterly defeated if I didn't do everything within my power to safeguard it, wouldn't you? Please, as citizens of Boulder, let's unite and defend the beauty and integrity of our one-of-a-kind, incredible city. Because I'm betting you love this place as much as I do.
