BOULDER, Colo. –

A frequent fixture at University of Colorado meetings announced to a room full of faculty and staff members Friday that he was nominating Ward Churchill to be the permanent chancellor of the Boulder campus.

The informal nomination was met with murmurs, and the realization it was a moot point.

CU alumnus George Walker’s nomination for the firebrand professor came too late: Nominations for the top post were due Wednesday.

Churchill, a fired ethnic studies professor who won a wrongful-termination lawsuit against the school this week, could have his CU job reinstated by a Denver district judge.

Interim Chancellor Phil DiStefano, during his campus address Friday, was mostly mum on the Churchill decision.

“While I am disappointed by the jury’s decision, I am still confident that the process we used to review allegations of research misconduct was appropriately applied in this case,” he said. “The university attorneys will evaluate the next steps in the legal process. It is too early to comment on how the judge’s final decision might impact the campus, as that decision has not yet been rendered.”

Archived comments

Phil DiStefano has been anti-student for decades. Churchill has been anti-CU for the past decade. How about a Chancellor Team? A partnership of the least likely candidates for the job.

If CU still allowed Guns on campus, they could duke it out on the Quad with a paintball match at 20 paces. Sell tickets and increase the income to buy footballs.

George Walker or Johnny Walker?

Ward should be nominated for a position with Open Space. Make him Director in Charge of Invasive Species Eradication.

Dear Brittany Anas —

“CU alumni suggests Churchill for Boulder chancellor”

“CU alumni George Walker . . .”

“Alumni” is a plural noun (subject).”Suggests” is a singular verb (predicate). The correct subject, meaning ONE former student at CU, would be “alumnus”.

I know you kids have to get your journalistic training somewhere.Too bad you don’t get it in college.

He a 20 year old wife who passed out drunk in the middle of the road and was run over.

May have been the last.

The positive thing about the verdict in the Wardo Churchill versus University of Colorado is the strong statement that our free speech, has been guaranteed by the US. Constitution, is very important! The other positive thing about it is that proper assignment of Mr. Churchill’s value to the University being exactly 1 dollar.

The negative thing about this verdict is that a huckster who preempts a bona fide Amer-Indian ethnic teaching position with CU is not only getting a free ride, but also getting the possibility of collecting lots of money. I strongly believe that some kind of pro-American Indian organization should take good old Wardo to task!

Being a very liberal person, I am extremely concerned with the idea that “the end justifies the means” and therefore if you mean well and wish to improve the horrible treatment American Indians receive from US government and our own society, it is very much okay falsify your data to back up your position pretend to be an American Indian and plagiarize.

Whoever wants to nominate “Ward Churchill to be the permanent chancellor of the Boulder campus.” is exactly in the same position as a neo-Nazi who claims that it was Gen. Eisenhower who should have been hang hanged for crimes at the Nürnberg trials and hanged in Jerusalem instead of Adolf Eichmann!

Churchill for chancellor is a super idea!He knows the underbelly of CU and could begin to make some critical changes.DiStephano should be fired—–sneaky and mean—-plus doesn’t value rights for anyone except for those he likes.

Some self-loathing Repug spewed this nonsense:”The other positive thing about it is that proper assignment of Mr. Churchill’s value to the University being exactly 1 dollar.”

Wrong, and wrong again.

The jury awarded $1 in damages, because Dr. Churchill didn’t ask for any specific monetary amount, he only wanted his $96,000.00 / year position back, which is what he’ll get, and which is — ipso facto — his value to CU.

The CU Regents were found guilty of UNLAWFUL conduct. Hank Brown was found guilty of UNLAWFUL conduct by the unanimous jury.

It is no surprise that someone like you would support and endorse UNLAWFUL conduct.

“Churchill for chancellor is a super idea! He knows the underbelly of CU…”

It’s hard to tell if you’re being deliberately ironic and sarcastic.

Yeah, Ward sure knows the underbelly of the university-it’s where he lives!

“DiStephano should be fired—–sneaky and mean—-plus doesn’t value rights for anyone except for those he likes.”

The latter sounds exactly like Ward, and what’s your problem with ‘sneaky & mean’-Ward excells at that, too. (Y’know, like the ‘rights’ of Italian Americans or writing his own papers under another’s name and replacing others names and works with his own.)

And on just what GROUNDS should Distephano be fired? What Academic or Administrative rule, law or standard did he violate? What specific investigations were conducted or recommended? How many levels of review and defense was he offered and what were his responses?

Or doesn’t he ‘deserve’ the same processes as Ward received, and those have been deemed ‘inadequate’, ‘evil’ and worse.

“It is no surprise that someone like you would support and endorse UNLAWFUL conduct.”

Really? It seemed like CU was adjudicated as firing Ward IMPROPERLY. It didn’t seem like criminal violations were alleged or established. Not even perjury-not even by Ward.

This was a jury in a civil trial after all, NOT a grand jury issueing indictments.

That seems reserved to Ward supporters, who seem to very poor winners.

Plywaski knows his subject matter. Ward his a huckster and plays the grandstand well. His national TV appearances on Columbus Day are well executed, just as was his self appointment as spokesman for the neo-nazi movement on Sept 11th.

America is all about plurality. Differing views get a voice. As CU is a public school it cannot deny Ward’s free speech.

However, stealing other people’s work and calling it his own original work without credit to those that wrote it is simply theft. Lying about his lineage to gain respect for being a “minority” is high crime.

Ward was kicked out of CU for being a thief and a liar, and not for being an outspoken minority.

To re-instate him as a Professor and forgive his crimes will teach students the lessons of political subterfuge.

Absolutely unbelievable . . . although vicky.green beat me to the punch, I just have to echo her astonishment that (a) an allegedly professional journalist would so misuse the word “alumni” and that (b) an allegedly professional editor would write (or allow to be written) a headline that repeats the error.

Who’s running this place anyway: a bunch of high school (or at least college) dropouts?

Fascinating. There appears to be no limit on the number of times, with infinite minor variations, that people can repeat the same handful of shopworn and threadbare “facts” about this much hashed-over case and utter the same banalities about them with the air of revealing some novel insight.

Dr_Johnson

Churchill’s award is a $1 bill, which displays the visage of George Washington, a person he might consider a colonialist invader, an antagonist in the creation of the vile master narrative. He won it fairly (?) in an American court of justice. I hope he enjoys his token of irony.

Speaking of banal, and offering only that, and projecting that as novel.

And in 3 sentences, the limit of your intellect and contribution.

How could any forum proceed without a neo-mondo pronouncement?

Brittany – here’s a little clue for you: George Walker is a nut case and frequently shows up at CU meetings to rant and babble. If he’s on his meds, it’s more of a rant.If not, it’s more of a babble.Either way, if you’ve been around for more than a month, you should know that and framing an article around this guy is sad and pathetic.
