A Niwot man wanted for failing to show up for his December jury trial on 2007 charges he sexually assaulted an 8-year-old girl and drank her urine was arrested this week by authorities in Sedona, Ariz.
Joseph S. Cardillo, 49, was arrested on a Boulder County warrant for failure to appear at about 9:30 a.m. Wednesday in the Arizona tourist town — more than 800 miles from Boulder.
Sedona police Cmdr. Ron Wheeler said his agency was tipped off that Cardillo was staying in a home near the Sedona Airport early Wednesday. When officers found him in the house, Cardillo was cooperative. .
“Once we made contact with him, he knew what was up, and he was taken into custody without incident,” Wheeler said.
The homeowner was in the house with Cardillo when he was arrested. Wheeler said he didn’t know who phoned in the tip or where the tipster lived.
Cardillo is being held at the Yavapai County Jail in Arizona. Boulder County Sheriff’s Office Cmdr. Rick Brough said Cardillo will be brought back to Boulder as soon as he agrees to be extradited. If Cardillo doesn’t agree, Brough said, the Sheriff’s Office will get a governor’s warrant to bring him back.
Cardillo last year pleaded not guilty to felony sex assault on a child by a person in a position of trust. Detectives began investigating him in 2007 based on a tip from the Department of Social Services.
According to Cardillo’s arrest warrant, an 8-year-old girl’s mother, Lora Lee Hansen-Beard, met Cardillo at a Hare Krishna meeting in Boulder and started dropping her daughter off with him on Saturdays for sleepovers at his home in the 8100 block of Centerbridge Drive.
The girl told detectives that Cardillo caught her urine in cupped hands to drink and used a sex toy on her, according to the warrant. They slept in the same bed together, usually naked, and would bathe together, according to police.
If convicted of the felony sex-assault charge, Cardillo could face life in prison.
Hansen-Beard told authorities that she knew about her daughter’s relationship with Cardillo but didn’t think it was a problem as long as it was touching and not sex, according to police. She was charged with two misdemeanor counts of child abuse and sentenced to 24 months of probation in July 2008.
In March, a Boulder-based bail bonds company — that lost $100,000 when Cardillo missed his jury trial and skipped town — filed a lawsuit against the suspect’s brother and sister.
