LAFAYETTE, Colo. –
A Lafayette man got in a scuffle with one of his neighbors at a Saturday evening barbecue, then returned to the party with a kitchen knife to stab him in the stomach, police said.
The victim, Jesus Alvarado, is in critical condition at Exempla Good Samaritan Medical Center with a five-inch wound to his right abdomen, said Lafayette police Sgt. Gene McCausey.
Doctors told officers that they “have seen patients with this type of injury result in death,” McCausey said.
Wilfredo Sanchez-Yanez, 21, was booked into Boulder County Jail on suspicion of attempted murder, criminal conspiracy and first-degree assault. He has no prior criminal record in the state, according to the Colorado Bureau of Investigation.
Sanchez-Yanez was drunk and belligerent around 8:30 p.m. when he came to the barbecue in the parking lot of his small apartment complex at 509 S. Public Road, McCausey said.
Alvarado, who turned 41 on Tuesday, offered some chicken to Sanchez-Yanez. The suspect took the chicken and threw it in the trash, prompting Alvarado to ask him to leave, police said.
“That’s what caused the hard feelings,” McCausey said.
Sanchez-Yanez then grabbed a knife and approached Alvarado, police said, but several other people wrestled the weapon away. The suspect returned to his unit, grabbed a kitchen knife and, quietly without warning, stabbed Alvarado, police said.
Police were called to the scene at 8:42 p.m. Nine minutes later, an officer found Sanchez-Yanez walking nearby and arrested him without incident. Sanchez-Yanez, talking to a Spanish-speaking sheriff’s deputy, declined police interviews and requested a lawyer, McCausey said.
A bail amount has not yet been set for Sanchez-Yanez, jail officials said Sunday afternoon.
On Sunday afternoon, blood from the stabbing remained in the parking lot next to the peach-colored converted motel.
Marta Rodriguez, who hosted the barbecue with her husband, said Sanchez-Yanez “was really drunk” when he came to their party. She said the man hadn’t lived there for more than a month.
Rodriguez, who has lived at the complex for three years, said her 11-year-old daughter was at the party when the stabbing took place.
“I don’t really feel safe here now,” she said.
She and her family visited Alvarado at Exempla’s intensive care unit Sunday morning. She said he’s “very sore and in pain,” but is expected to survive.

First, my condolences to the Alvarado-Rodriguez family. I pray your husband recovers quickly and that the criminal who attacked and insulted him is fully served justice.
Next: OK, wow. Racist much fellow posters? What I find interesting is how the racism steers the conversation so far off topic that no SOLUTIONS to the community problem presented here are hashed out.
Notice how the very nature of “illegal” status played into the development of this crime? I am trying to imagine what would have stopped this family and other party-goers from calling the police the first time Sanchez-Yanez came after the host with a knife. This kind of internalized fear of the police is the symptom of a break in society. All the racism does is foster the break in the system.
These people are my neighbors, in that we live within a few miles of each other. Everyone in the area has a vested interest in a real solution to the kind of flaw in the system that would create an underground class of people who cannot even feel safe calling the police to stop a violent crime for fear of exposure. People doing nothing wrong–in fact, attempting to strengthen their community by offering food to a new neighbor.
And guess what? No matter how many racist jokes you tell, the people who live, work and raise their children in your community ARE your neighbors and are a part of your community. Treating them as criminals for seeking a better life for their families winds up mixing good families together with true criminals. This BBQ is simply one of the results of institutionalized xenophobia and classist, racist, ethnocentric elitism.

Concerning crime and Longmont, Lafayette, Erie, and all the affectionate names the labelers and bigots apply to these places, do you even have a life? Don’t you realize that crime like this happens in every city and town in America? Or is that except in Boulder? As I recall, some guy killed his family there last month. Welcome to America. Desperate people do desperate things and fools do foolish things. It happens everywhere.
If you had a brain in your head you would realize that this is a symptom of the human race, to which you belong.

The problem I have with your comment is your qualification of someone “looking for a better life” NOT as a criminal. Last time I checked entering this country illegally, whether white, black, brown or purple, is indeed illegal. Bottom line, we are a country based upon laws which are there for a reason, the luxury is not there to pick and choose which ones you feel are good or bad or are in the way of someone “looking for a better life”
Let’s say I need money to get a better life, I’m a good person, live a good life, participate in my community, however I rob a bank because I’m looking for a better life and the money is the key to that. Am I a criminal?
The first step to solving this problem is being honest about what people who enter this country illegally are(regardless of skin color): Criminals

What?Substantiate your claim, (i.e. prove it). You’re full of hot air.
Your whole premise that you’re legal because you got into this country before the gates were closed and locked is flawed and pathetic. It is based 100% in pure racism that you have a right to this land but indigenous people of this continent don’t.
As for ‘paying’ for housing for the underprivileged, its our obligation to care for the less privileged, and we’re already paying for it one way or another.Right now we’re paying for it with decreased property values, higher crime rates and urban blight.Every human, illegal (whatever ‘illegal’ means in this context) or otherwise, deserves a decent place to live. These flophouses are not safe, they look like hell, there are numerous drug busts in them, overdoses, child abuse resulting in death (Tanner Dowler), lunacy (setting oneself on fire), etc. They need to be razed and we need to assist those that call these tenement properties ‘home’ a decent, safe and respectable place to live, like in your back yard for example.

you are up agains a hard wall. If you single anyone out as an illegal alien and have them show proof, you and your employer face exposure to what is called, document or citizenship discrimination. (class discrimination).
For your circumstances the following actions can produce dramatic results:
1. A full recertification of I-9 forms for all employees including those who are U.S. citizens without singling out one person. (requires cooperation of the company).
2. you can report this to ICE as immigration violations related to I-9 forms and illegal aliens. (Recommended) http://www.ice.gov/about/contact.htm
3. The laid off citizen employees or you in thier behalf with attorneys can file a labor based complaint for Citizenship discrimination with the Office of Special Council: (recommended)
http://www.usdoj.gov/crt/osc/
To obtain information about filing a charge of National Origin or Citizenship discrimination under the IRCA, contact the Office of Special Council at 1-800-255-7688 (hearing impaired 1-800-237-2515).
YOu can do any of the above or even all three at the same time.

Yes, though loosely organized, many residents of old town Lafayette. It wasn’t long ago that one could drive through the flop house in the 100 block of N Public 24 hours a day and buy whatever contraband they wanted. The ‘pink’ flophouse where this incident occurred has the same reputation as does the Lafayette Motel and next door Circle Motel (rooms are trailers from the 1940’s) where Tanner Dowler’s parents killed him.
They are health hazards, fire hazards, zones of high criminal activity, etc., etc.Lafayette has for many years neglected to enact seizure by eminent domain. They need to reevaluate that position if they ever want to clean up and revitalize Old Town.

surfrider that doesn’t even fully make sense–but neither do many of these posts.
Why not actually create solutions, instead of creating problems? I think the way the border is right now sucks–it is not the right solution to the problem of our southern neighbors’ plight or to the problems we have in our own country. But sealing up the border like a brick wall is impractical on both humanitarian and financial grounds.
Solutions never come from hateful rants. They often develop out of simple conversation, however.
