BOULDER, Colo. –

The American Red Cross is closing the shelters set up to aid stranded travelers in the Denver area on Thursday.

The storm that dropped more than a foot of snow across the area has started to weaken, so the Red Cross is shutting down operations. Fourteen people visited the shelters over six hours, and half of those were along U.S. 36.

The agency is still operating shelters in Wellington, Monument and Peyton. The Pikes Peak Red Cross Chapter has opened a shelter at the La Junta Senior Center as the effects of the storm move south.
