Colorado Buffaloes are going with the experience of Cody Hawkins over the speed of Tyler Hansen, starting the junior at quarterback against Colorado State.

Hawkins, the son of coach Dan Hawkins, and Hansen were in a hotly contested quarterback battle all through August camp. So close was the competition, Dan Hawkins didn’t give any clues who he might start until it appeared on the video screen just before kickoff Sunday.

The tandem split time last season after Hansen burned his redshirt year in the middle of the season. Hansen threw for 280 yards in 2008, and ran for 261.

Cody Hawkins is starting his third straight season opener. He has thrown for 4,585 yards, 36 touchdowns and 25 interceptions in his career.
