When Perez Hilton has something to say, people stop and listen.
The flamboyant gossip columnist attracts millions of fans to his celebrity-driven blog page, but now Hilton’s aiming for a new audience.
The blogger developed the 17-city Perez Hilton Presents Tour to show off his favorite music artists, and now he’s bringing some of those bands to Denver.
Hilton will not be at Friday’s Bluebird Theater show, but the concert will feature some of his favorite bands. The Denver stop features Natalie Portman’s Shaved Head, Ladyhawke and Semi Precious Weapons.
“I started off blogging as a hobby,” Hilton told the Colorado Daily. “I just set up the site for myself and my readers took it worldwide. I now have over 11 million readers a day” at PerezHilton.com.
Everyone from Brad Pitt to Miley Cyrus is fair game for Hilton’s saucy commentaries. The blogger believes that fans of celebrity gossip look to the Internet for their news fix, and that factor has propelled his popularity.
“People expect to get news from me in real time,” Hilton explained. “Web sites like mine have changed the way celebrity news gets out to the public. People want to get this news as soon as it happens!
“Whatever the next story I’m working on is — that’s the next scoop.”
Although Hilton didn’t reveal his next high-profile story, the blogger has been known to break news about his favorite music acts.
Hilton was one of the first media heads to rave about Lady Gaga’s sexy take on pop music.
“I’ve always been a music lover,” Hilton said. “I love music and I’m very passionate about it. I’ve been writing about music for years, and my readers really trust and respect my recommendations. If something’s good, you like it instantly.
“I discovered Lady Gaga early on in the scene. I became a big supporter of hers — and it’s amazing to see people’s perceptions of her change. At first no one got her, but now she’s a success and I feel like a proud parent.”
Hilton decided to take his passion for music to the next level. The enterprising blogger has now developed his indie label Perezcious Music. This summer, the label signed French recording artist Sliimy as its debut project.
However, Hilton stayed mum about the label for some time.
“I’ve had the idea for a label for awhile, but I’ve only just announced it,” Hilton revealed. “I wanted to wait until I was ready to release the music.
“I thought I could run my label, because I know good music, I have good ideas — and I have the resources. I’ve signed some great artists to my label and I want to share them with the world. There will be consistently good music coming from this label.”
Hilton has been known to throw musical events with artists like Katy Perry and Kanye West, so the blogger decided the next step was to take his favorite musical artists on the road.
The Perez Hilton Presents tour debuted Sept. 10 and the road show will hit key cities in the United States. The tour features up-and-coming artists Ladyhawke, Frankmusik, Sliimy and Julian Perretta.
“I’ve been throwing music events for awhile,” Hilton said. “I thought it would be great to take this music festival concept and make it more accessible to everyone of all ages. This way, everyone will be able to experience some cool new music.
“I’m going out on some of the tour dates and it will be super-fun. It will be awesome to see the audiences’ response to the music and see them enjoying themselves.”
Hilton’s music tour will conclude Oct. 3 in Los Angeles, but the blogger said he still has some more items on his to-do list.
“The best thing about my job is being my own boss,” Hilton said. “I definitely have a lot of stuff I want to do. I want to release some more great music — and there’s a TV project I’d like to get off the ground.
“The one thing I haven’t done yet, is to have a family and kids. I just have to make sure I build up my army of everything I’m doing, so I can have a little more time for my personal life.”
