When: 9 p.m. Friday
Where: Boulder Theater, 2032 14th St.
Paper Bird wanted to give its fans a live EP, so the local band’s releasing Live at Twist & Shout on Tuesday.
That’s not all.
Paper Bird’s hosting an EP release concert at the Boulder Theater on Friday night. The event will show off the group’s mix of old-time music and modern sounds — and feature special local guests.
Esme Patterson is one of Paper Bird’s star singers, and the performer was happy to talk to the Daily about her band and the new EP.
Q: How has Paper Bird’s sound developed over the past few years?
A: We’ve really been developing the sound of our band. The album we have out we did two years ago, and we’ve really changed as a band.
Since then, we’ve really grown. We’ve explored our instrumentation and creativity.
We’re really just unfolding as a band.
Q: Why did Paper Bird record the new EP at Twist & Shout ?
A: We love Twist & Shout!
The store has such a history of indie music prowess. They’ve been really good to local musicians and they really give us a voice in the community. That’s why we love supporting them!
The new EP really captures the feel of our live shows and it really expresses our band on record. It was a really fun experience to record it live.
Q: Why is Paper Bird hosting the EP release party in Boulder?
A: We’re all really excited about the Boulder Theater show! It’s been a long time since we played Boulder, so we wanted to do a nice big show there.
We also invited some of our favorite artists to be on the bill with us. Nathaniel Rateliff & The Wheel, plus the Dry River Yacht Club will be on the show with us.
Q: What does Paper Bird have planned for the EP release party?
A: This show will be a nice chance to play with a lot of friends, and we’ll be able to get some good music out there. It will be like a musical love fest!
We’re going to be playing some brand-new music that no one’s heard before at the Boulder Theater. This will be a special show, and we definitely have some tricks up our sleeve for this release party.
Q: What’s next for Paper Bird?
A: We’re going to have national distribution for our record. That will be our first foray into the national record store market.
We’re also getting ready for our Halloween shows at Everyday Joe’s in Fort Collins. The shows are on Oct. 30-31.
We love any excuse to put on face paint and dress up, so those will be pretty fun shows. Last year, we opened DeVotchKa’s Halloween shows — and that set the precedent for us.
And, we’re really going to focus on finishing our full-length record. After that, we’ll go out and do the touring thing.
