Any excuse to look like an idiot always makes the day better.

With Halloween just around the corner, it’s time to go shopping.

Just please do Boulder a favor: Don’t be Kate Gosselin.

And try to at least be creative if you go the risqué route.

Here are five shops around town to pick up your alter ego. Hurry! Only eight days left.

1 The Ritz

959 Walnut St., Boulder

Transform into a German beer girl, a firefighter, Batman or a pregnant nun. The Ritz stocks all the goods you’ll need to win that costume contest. Brand new and vintage, the shop has costumes available for rent or purchase, plus accessories.

2 Theatrical Costumes

2850 Iris Ave., Boulder

Snag the Bettie Page look with a dress from Theatrical Costumes. Get an Aqua Teen Hunger Force outfit or a Robot Chicken mask. The shop also has vintage duds to rent — ranging from Renaissance to Civil War period pieces.

3 Candy’s Vintage Clothing

4483 N. Broadway, Boulder

Go big pimpin’ as a disco king or queen (afro encouraged). Be a vintage cowboy or an authentic flapper. Candy’s in North Boulder has a huge collection of rare duds. The shop also has wigs and accessories — and most used items are available for rent.

4 Savers

695 S. Broadway, Boulder

Get a cheap leisure suit and dress as Ron Burgundy. Get an old wedding dress and be a corpse bride. The everyday thrift store always brings in a huge Halloween costume collection — new and used.

5 Seasonal shops

Black Widow Halloween, 1601 29th St., Suite 1301, Boulder

Spirit Halloween, 1600 Pearl St., Boulder

Here you’ll find all the makeup needed to create the perfect zombie. These temporary shops all carry hairspray colors, fake blood, cheap accessories and cheesy costumes-in-a-bag.

And, yes, Kate Gosselin wigs.
