Rogue Wave plays the Fox Theatre on Tuesday.

Rogue Wave took some time off from the music game. No worries, because the band’s back with a new CD and a Tuesday show at the Fox Theatre.

The Oakland band has been penning introspective pop tunes since 2002. The group’s new record, Permalight, was written by long-time members Zach Rogue and Pat Spurgeon

As an extra perk, Permalight was released on Jack Johnson’s Brushfire Records. You know, the guy who’s one of the headliners at the 2010 Mile High Music Festival.

“I answered an ad on Craig’s List in 2002 and I’ve been playing with Rogue Wave ever since,” drummer Pat Spurgeon said. “We were always an indie rock band, but our musical philosophy was to be in the moment.

“Our new record’s more upbeat and dancey, but it still has the softer side of Rogue Wave.”

Spurgeon’s excited about promoting Permalight, as the new record was produced by Dennis Herring. The studio pro’s worked on records with indie stars Modest Mouse and Mutemath.

“We really incorporated electronic music into the record,” Spurgeon said. “We put in some drum machines, because we really wanted to explore the electronic side of our music. It was a fun process, though we did get some hate mail from fans that are really into the first record.

“We’re excited to be on Brushfire Records. Zach’s friends with Jack Johnson and he thought we’d be a good match for the label. We’re a unique band, because the label is mostly singer-songwriters.”

Rogue Wave kicked off its new tour in March and the group’s looking forward to returning to the Fox.

“We’re ready to play Boulder,” Spurgeon said. “It’s been a few years since we’ve played the Fox. Just tell people to wear their dancing shoes.”
