As University of Colorado students prepare for the big spring move-out, members of the Kappa Sigma fraternity are gathering donations for the Vietnam Veterans Association.
Organizer and CU senior John Slota said the fraternity felt that vets were a deserving and often-forgotten group of heroes who deserve a little help.
“They put their lives on the line for us,” Slota said. “It seems only right that we could give something back to them.”
Members will be collecting donations Thursday at their 1100 Pennsylvania Ave. house and going door-to-door throughout Boulder, focusing mainly on University Hill.
During finals week students are packing up their belongings to move back home and often find themselves with things they don’t need or don’t want to move, Slota said. Acceptable donations include clothing, shoes, baby items, housewares and electronics, but not large items such as mattresses.
Becky Neuman, a CU sophomore majoring in Spanish and elementary education, said she is already cleaning out her closet and looking for a place to drop the excess baggage.
She said she’s glad there are options for getting rid of those items instead of just throwing them away.
“I definitely have some clothes, shoes and small furniture items like shelves or organizers that I don’t need anymore,” Neuman said.
