The University of Colorado’s Center for the Study and Prevention of Violence was awarded a $6.5 million grant to lead an effort to reduce youth violence in Denver’s Montbello neighborhood, the university announced Thursday.

The grant, funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, will support a five-year effort, including working with residents and a community board, beginning Sept. 30.

The northeastern Denver neighborhood has more than 1,100 reported offenses since January — 281 of which were violent crimes against another person, according to a report from the city of Denver.
