Breaking News

OK, this EP came out months ago, but we’re reviewing it now for three reasons. 1. It’s getting a re-release, 2. It didn’t get much attention in the first place and 3. It’s really good.

If you need to be convinced to check Guards out with a list of impressive collaborators, here it is: Chairlift’s Polachek James, MGMT’s James Richardson, Willowz’s Loren Shane Humphrey and Cult’s Madeline Follin.

But more importantly, Guards have a way of blending spacey vocals and instrumentation with a grungy rock edge. They’re at their best on “Don’t Wake The Dead,” sounding like they’re trying to get the dead to at least tap their toes, and on “Resolution of One,” snapping back and forth between quiet and full-force rock. It’s the kind of music best enjoyed live, in a smoky basement venue with a beer in hand, and the record does a good job of conveying that feeling.
