Better Luck Next Life, the second release from Royal Baths is a great album for a bad mood. The sound borders on the blues, but with a lot more grunge and “fuck this” attitude.
It’s all very dark, with Jigmae Baer singing things like, “Do not disbelieve me / When I tell you you should be afraid of me,” in a tone that just barely betrays any care about what you think. “Faster, Harder,” one of the two tracks released ahead of the album, drags wonderfully with a slow drum beat, bursts of fuzzy guitar, lethargic vocals, and a strong bass line driving it all into a guitar freak out at the end. Actually, Jeremy Cox is giving more than a few beatings on the album, drawing out some tortured screeching.
No doubt this album is lurking in a dark place, but if you’re there with it, it’s not a bad place to be.
