Boulder’s Women’s Wilderness Institute is celebrating some anniversaries this year.
This is the 15th anniversary of the organization, which aims to empower girls and women through outdoor experiences, said executive director Shari Leach. And this Thursday night it will host its 10th annual Gear and Cheer fundraiser.
For Gear and Cheer, the nonprofit gathers gear donations from the outdoor industry for both silent and live auctions. The proceeds go to the WWI’s scholarship fund for girls.
“This event specifically is designed to support the girls’ scholarships,” Leach said. “And last year, we had a record number of girls apply for and receive scholarships — 47 percent of applicants received scholarships, totaling about $40,000. We’re trying to raise the majority of that this evening.”
Most of those scholarships for backpacking, rock climbing and other programs go to girls in Colorado, she said.
In addition to gear auctions at the event, Leach said, “we have five different breweries coming to pour beer and three different wine sources.”
“One of the nice things about this, since we get the food and alcohol donated, 100 percent of that ticket price goes to the organization,” she said.
Last year, WWI suspended most of its programs for women and focused on girls’ programs. This year, Leach said, they’re bringing women’s programs back, including two for female veterans.
“Now that we feel like we’re on much firmer financial ground, we’re offering women’s programs again,” she said.
