T his Friday through Sunday, the University of Colorado will host its annual student fringe festival. Organizers say the CU Fringe Festival is the largest student in the country and host to a wide variety of arts, ranging from original films to one-woman shows.

The festival began 14 years ago as a student’s honors thesis project. A committee formed to petition for funds from CU student government to continue it; that committee evolved into CU Onstage, which assembles the festival each year.

“CU Onstage is the is the performing arts group on campus — what we look to do is create opportunities that aren’t available to students in their classes,” said Raechel Sherwood, director of CU Fringe Festival. “Very, very rarely would you come across the opportunity in a class where you would be able to produce your own show and receive funding for it.”

“So You Think You Can Keep Up with the Real Amazing Dance Moms of Jersey Shore Racing to be America’s Next Biggest Bachelor Idol Season XXII,” a musical blend of current reality television shows, will open the CU Fringe Festival on Friday at 7 p.m.

Writer and director Alex Hopkins put on “Sexting the Musical” last year as an original musical. Hopkins has since transformed her production into a feature length film, which premieres on Saturday at noon and Sunday at 6:30 p.m.

For the first time in Fringe history, all of the a cappella groups on campus will be performing on stage together in Acapellooza, featuring Mile 21, Extreme Measures, In The Buff, On The Rocks, Buffoons and On That Note. Acapellooza will be featured in the University Theatre Saturday at 3 p.m.

CU Fringe Festival will also have a heavy dose of comedy with a stand up comedy show, Left Right Tim, Sam Sketch Comedy and a performance of “Complete Works of Shakespeare.”

All shows, films, events and concerts at CU Fringe Festival are free and begin Friday night at 7 p.m. and conclude Sunday evening at 11:30 p.m. with the Drag and Burlesque Shows.
