Continuing through Saturday, Colfax Avenue is taking a quick nap from its day job of cheap drinks, panhandlers, trendy dives, alley cats, awesome breakfast burritos and prostitution rings to bring some rock to our earballs.
From dive bars to historic venues, Colfax has always been the primo spot in Denver to hear great live music, ranging from international gigs to garage bands.
In its second year, the Root 40 Music Fest (which started on Sunday, we missed five days already!) runs through Saturday with an expo that includes dozens of live performances from full bands to DJs to solo acts, and will feature vendors, music panels and keynote speakers. (Root 40 is a tribute to Colfax — the artist formerly known as Highway 40.)
Various local contributors include AEG’s Rob Thomas, Lyons’ Planet Bluegrass’ Steve Szymanski, longtime local singer Hazel Miller and Boulder’s Chris Daniels (of Chris Daniels and The Kings fame, who also teaches at CU-Denver.)
Also on the agenda for the fest are music-centric films at the Denver Film Center, 2510 E. Colfax Ave. Proceeds from the fest will profit the music program Colfax’s East High School.

Free rides, Denver
Have you heard of that high-speed rail running around the Metro Denver area?
What?
I know. Its lack of presence in Boulder makes my gas tank cry.
(With all sincerity US 36/private company/CDOT, those funds that are being funneled into the wheels on the bus to make them go round is quite inconsequential. By the time that global-warming-on-wheels plan is finished, I’ll be flying my submarine tank to Vegas on the gas of couscous oil and iPhone wings.)
The light rail’s newest addition, the RTD West Line that runs from downtown Denver’s Union Station to Golden, is celebrating a coming out party with free light rail rides, parties, art exhibits, vendors, live entertainment and food trucks. (Obviously.)

Fashion, ’80s and Italy
The newest addition to the Mile High Pasquini’s Italian pizzeria family is Tony P’s, 777 E. 17th Ave., Denver.
Saturday and Sunday, the Italian joint (used to be JR’s) will host Paninaro Rewind, an ’80s party/fashion show hosted by owner Tony Pasquini and Fashion Denver where local designers will exhibit their wears while you drink booze, eat delicious pizza and rock out.
