One of the criticisms I hear of Twitter is that it’s only for following celebrities.
“Why should I care what Justin Bieber has to say?” people often ask.
To be fair, they have a point. One of his latest tweets simply reads, “focused. #musicjournals.” Thrilling stuff there.
While Biebs may not be the most interesting person on Twitter, he shouldn’t represent the whole of famous Tweeps. Turns out there are actually some pretty entertaining celebrities out there who deserve a follow.
Eric Stonestreet, @ericstonestreet
The actor who plays Cam on “Modern Family,” Eric Stonestreet’s Twitter proves the point that actors are way different from their characters. Stonestreet uses Vine more than anyone I know, often to make jokes about potentially meeting his soul mate on a plane or pulling horrible pranks on little kids. You’ll feel horrible about laughing at his posts… but you’ll laugh.
Ezra Koenig, @arzE
Sometimes, celebrities are worth following even if you don’t really care about their work. Take Ezra Koenig, for example. He’s the lead singer of Vampire Weekend, a band I like, even though I wouldn’t really consider a fan. But his Twitter is full of bizarrely hilarious posts, such as the saga of the father/Rolex conundrum, which started with this tweet:
“would u rather find out that ur dad is ur real dad but his Rolex is fake OR that he is not ur real dad but his Rolex is real?? CHOOSE WISELY.”
Zach Braff, @zachbraff
I like following Zach Braff on Twitter because he really engages with his followers and fans, retweeting their well wishes and — even better — their jokes.
He recently retweeted a fan who said “#OMG can’t believe I just met @zachbraff #starstruck” and shared a photo of a Pur water filter, poking at Braff’s voice acting role in the Pur commercials.
He also shares interesting links he finds on Reddit — just like us! Braff recently made waves by using Kickstarter to fund his new film project, and he kept a light tone in his updates about the race to meet the project’s goals.
Mindy Kaling, @mindykaling
From her time as Kelly Kapoor on “The Office” to her current amazing show, “The Mindy Project,” I have always been a fan of Mindy Kaling. But having recently started following her on Twitter, my love has reached new heights.
Kaling’s tweets often say what we’re all thinking. My favorite of late (maybe because I just saw the new “Star Trek” movie?) is “Girls like Spock cuz Spock’s like ‘logically I should not feel love’ and we’re all like ‘oh yes you will, you little hot Vulcan bastard.'”
Twitter is good for way more than just following celebrities, but these famous folks show that following celebrities isn’t always a bad idea.
