August is mercilessly coming right around the corner, meaning another school year (and my long awaited 21st) will be upon us sooner than any of us are surely ready for. Until then, let the soothing sounds of 1190 wind your summer down with these additions to rotation.
The Octopus Project has returned with Fever Forms, an album that takes the twee darlings’ love of looping instrumentals to orchestral heights. Fever Forms‘ songs sound reminiscent of some of the more pleasant passages on Dan Deacon’s latest release, America, with sounds acoustic and electric intermingling joyously in a wall of plucked strings and electronic beats.
On the hip-hop side of things, Run the Jewels, aka Killer Mike and El-P, have continued the success of their collaboration last year with a self-titled album that sees both titans handling MC duties to glorious results. As with their other work, Run the Jewels is a concoction of hip-hop styles both old school and revolutionary, with El-P’s beats rumbling furiously beneath the dueling masterminds. Run the Jewels is essential for any fans of either of these hip-hop kingpins.
Lastly on a more psychedelic note, Hebronix sees former vocalist/guitarist for Yuck Daniel Blumberg tackling the abstract on his new solo album Unreal. With production by Royal Trux’s Neil Hagerty, Unreal is a woozy concoction of noodling guitars, bizarre electronics and the slackery vocals Blumberg made his name on in Yuck. Unreal is an insanely chill release that embraces psychedelic rock in pure, simple terms, and makes a wonderful soundtrack for these rainy, late summer days.
Other additions include:
* Jinx, Weekend.
* Finding Meaning in Difference, The Mallard.
* Pura Vida Conspiracy, Gogol Bordello.
