The Big Freedia circle is hard to miss.
Freedia, a man whose stage persona is female, dresses outrageously. One of his bandmates has an orange-blonde mohawk. They twerk.
That’s what they were doing when Second Story Garage spotted them on Sixth Street in Austin, Tex., during the South by Southwest music showcase on Tuesday.
Second Story Garage caught Big Freedia during SXSW 2013, and it was one if the best shows of the showcase that year. She’s one of the hundreds of artists performing during this year’s showcase, which started Tuesday and runs through Sunday.
Second Story Garage hosts Ashley Dean and Quentin Young headed down to Austin on Tuesday. SXSW is one of the largest annual music events in the world. Music professionals are everywhere, and artists travel from all over the world hoping to get discovered — or just to make new friends and be a part of the SXSW madness. Many of those artists are from Colorado.
Downtown Austin on Tuesday night was a riot of sound. Scores of bands were performing in Sixth Street’s countless venues, and hundreds of people swarmed the street, which was cordoned off for the occasion.
Colorado organizers, such as the Denver Post’s Reverb, CPR OpenAir, SpokesBuzz and Oskar Blues, have their own showcases planned for later in the week. Second Story Garage will be there checking out Wheelchair Sports Camp, The Epilogues, Grant Farm, Gungor, Inner Oceans and more.
The Yawpers are down here, too, though singer Nate Cook has Tweeted that he had a serious case of the flu and had to go to the emergency room.
