Chipping away at EU: Banksy’s take on Brexit

LONDON — The street artist Banksy has let the world know his take on Britain’s decision to leave the European Union.

Banksy has created a large mural in the British port of Dover showing a workman chipping away one of the 12 stars on the EU flag. His representatives Monday confirmed the work is genuine.

British voters decided last year to leave the 28-nation EU. The new mural is in the city that’s the main British gateway for traffic to continental Europe. It also appeared as the U.K. is holding an early election.

Banksy’s satirical stencils — rats, kissing policemen, riot police with smiley faces — first appeared on walls in Bristol before spreading to London and then to cities around the world. His artworks have fetched as much as $1.8 million.

Charges dismissed against man accused of stealing mom’s stew

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — A New Mexico man arrested for breaking into his mom’s house to steal her traditional New Mexican stew won’t face charges after all.

Last week, a state district judge dismissed charges against Jonathan Carlos Ray, who was charged in 2015 for the theft of his mother’s posole. The judge says the only witnesses to the alleged crime were Ray and his mother.

Police say Ray was arrested after he ignored his mother’s orders to stay away from her posole and ran off with the holiday dish.

According to a criminal complaint, Ray sent his mom a text message saying he wanted some of her posole. She told him no.

The complaint says the mother later found her gate and garage broken and a pot of the posole missing.

Posole, a hominy, is a traditional soup or stew made with pork or chicken popular in Mexico and the American Southwest.
