The Boulder County Sheriff’s Office is investigating an apparent suicide of a 44-year-old Loveland man at the Boulder County Jail on Sunday afternoon.

According to a release, just before 3 p.m., an inmate in a maximum security part of the jail noticed a neighboring inmate appeared to have hanged himself. He called for help and then entered the neighboring man’s cell to try to help until jail staff members arrived, according to the release.

Rescue personnel worked to revive the unconscious inmate for more than 30 minutes, but were unsuccessful. The inmate was pronounced dead by a doctor at about 3:30 p.m.

The man had been in custody since July 10 and was being held on drug- and weapon-related charges, according to the release, and had given no prior indications that he was despondent or suicidal. He was alone in the cell at the time.

The man’s identity is being withheld pending notification of relatives.
