Section of Lee Hill Drive temporarily closed to cyclists over safety concerns
PUBLISHED: | UPDATED:

Boulder County Transportation has closed Lee Hill Drive to cycling between Olde Stage Road and Deer Trail Road, due to unsafe conditions. The closure, detailed in this map, is anticipated to last until the end of October. The road will be reopened sooner, however, if the county can get it back to two lanes ahead of the anticipated schedule.

The closure has been effective since July 29, but the county has received numerous reports of cyclists continuing to ride on the road. Boulder County Sheriff’s deputies have increased patrols of the area and intend to write citations to cyclists who violate the closure.

The road is closed due to extremely unsafe conditions, according to a news release. One lane of asphalt has been removed and there is now an approximately 3-feet deep trench protected only by orange construction barrels when work is not taking place. The remaining asphalt is in poor condition and leaves only enough room for the widest emergency response vehicle to safely travel the road.

The single-lane construction zone is currently 1,200 feet long, but it may grow as more guardrail is removed and installed. There is no guardrail along the excavated area, and the drop off below is almost vertical.
