Boulder Valley school board candidate Maya Key announced she’s dropping out of the race for the District C seat.

Key, founder and director of the nonprofit Wild at Heart for feral cats, was running against incumbent Kathy Gebhardt.

Key, who was running mainly because of her concerns about the district’s achievement gap for lower income students and students of color, said she decided to drop out after a conversation with Gebhardt assured her it is a board priority.

Boulder Valley school board members represent different geographic areas, but are elected by voters in the entire district. Four of the seven school board seats — Districts A, C, D and G — are up for election in November. With Key’s decision, two of the four are contested.
