The Boulder County District Attorney’s Office will host a Fresh Start event in an effort to give individuals with active warrants stemming from non-violent, low-level misdemeanor or traffic cases an opportunity to resolve their warrants.

Fresh Start will be Nov. 2 in Longmont.  At that time, individuals with warrants in qualifying cases can speak with a representative from the district attorney’s office to either resolve the case or set the case for a new court date.

In addition, those who attend can talk with volunteers and attorneys from the Boulder County Criminal Defense Bar, and immigration attorneys to help answer questions. Appointments are not necessary to attend.

Regardless of the outcome on that day, the warrant for the individuals’ arrest will be vacated if they appear for court on Nov. 2, according to a news release from the Boulder County District Attorney’s Office.

The first Fresh Start event took place at a Boulder courthouse in April and is believed to be the first of its kind in Colorado. Over 30 warrants were resolved that day. As promised, no one that came to the courthouse that day was arrested on a warrant.

Boulder County District Attorney Michael Dougherty said the he was excited to offer the event to the Longmont area.

“By giving eligible individuals this opportunity, we hope to keep them from cycling in and out of the jail on minor offenses,” he said in the release. “We can enhance community safety if we help people get back on the right track and not re-offend. That is why the District Attorney’s Office utilizes diversion, restorative justice, and Fresh Start.”

The Fresh Start program is a collaborative effort between the Boulder DA’s Office, the defense bar, judges, and the Boulder County Sheriff’s Office, the news release said. Eligibility guidelines for Fresh Start are posted on the district attorney’s website: bouldercounty.org/district-attorney or call (303) 413-7574.
