From the organizers of the annual Juneteenth celebration comes a new monthly Denver music tradition, a First Friday Five Points Jazz Hop that kicks off on Jan. 3.

Starting then, and continuing every first Friday throughout the year, listeners can find multiple jazz and R&B acts at a handful of Five Points bars each night — hence the “hop” part. Denverite first reported the new event this week.

Musical groups will always play at venues along Welton Street. So on Friday, Jan. 3, Joshua Trinidad Trio plays Spangalang Brewery, starting at 5:30 p.m. Next up is the Tenia Nelson Trio at Dunbar Kitchen & Tap House at 7 p.m., followed by Vashti Jazz at 8:30 p.m. at beer bar Goed Zuur.

“Denver’s most historic neighborhood keeps culture and Jazz alive,” reads the event website, where acts and locales are posted ahead of first Fridays.

Starting nearly a century ago, Five Points drew legendary jazz performers — like Dinah Washington and Count Basie — from across the country to play the Rossonian Lounge. The 107-year-old hotel is getting redeveloped now, too, to bring back a jazz club and restaurant.
