An upcoming lecture at the University of Colorado Boulder will explore how to solve America’s polarization — and whether the answer lies in places like California.

Ruy Teixeira, a senior fellow at the Center for American Progress, will speak at a Benson Center for the Study of Western Civilization lecture on Monday as part of the Conservative Thought and Policy series.

The speech is part of the center’s American National Character Project, which “seeks to explore and identify principles and purposes that Americans do or might in the future share, and to discover how to provide a way forward for republican self-governance in America.” Speakers are scheduled throughout February, March and April.

Organizer and senior scholar in residence William B. Allen said he’s looking forward to Teixeira’s perspective on whether the California model — having a largely one-party state — is the answer to solving the country’s divisions.

“The immediate problem to solve is an almost intractable polarization, and the question is how do you resolve polarization,” Allen said. “One answer is to build a culture of tolerance, and the other is to eliminate differences. The prescription of turning all of the United States into California is the prescription for eliminating differences.”

Teixeira is expected to speak on “underlying demographic, economic and political trends” that point to the future of American politics, according to a statement from CU Boulder.

Allen described “purple” states like Colorado as in a transition stage to become predominantly Democratic states.

“Beyond the immediate practical question is what’s healthy in terms of a political future, or to put it another way, does this idea of turning the country into California imply in some way a massive (participation) dropout phenomenon and people giving up on the country?” Allen said.

The series has been well received so far, Allen said, with the goal of not just echoing existing beliefs prevalent in Boulder.

“We’ve arranged this to be a challenge to ourselves,” Allen said. “We want to think through all of the perspectives, to think about what is possible.”
