Erie has recently been named the sixth safest city in Colorado by Safewise’s annual Safest Cities of Colorado.
Safewise gathers national crime and safety trends and products and shows how they affect people and neighborhoods.
The report calculates violent and property crime rates by looking at reported violent crimes such as aggravated assault, murder, rape and robbery in each city and the number of reported property crimes such as burglary and motor vehicle theft. Then, staff calculates the rate of crimes per 1,000 people in each city.
According to the rank, Erie scored a 1.0 for its violent crime rate and a 10.2 for property crime.
“We are proud to be recognized as Safewise’s sixth safest city,” said Spokesperson for Erie Police Department Amber Luttrell. “Our ranking continues to climb thanks to our increase in community policing practices, and community partnerships that enhance our efforts to educate, and involve the community.”
This year’s ranking was an improvement from 2018 when the town was ranked seventh.
Erie was the only municipality in Boulder County to rank in the top 10.
According to Safewise, the methodology includes FBI crime statistics and U.S. Census population to rank cities.
“To add extra insight and depth to that assessment, we include demographic information and the results of our proprietary State of Safety research study,” according to Safewise.
Lafayette was ranked 19, with a violent crime rate of 2.1 and a property crime rate of 12.1.
