Motorists on Saturday can expect delays as the Ironman Boulder 70.3 returns to Boulder County.

The bike course for the event will be active from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday. It will include the following roads:

  • Colo. 119/Diagonal Highway; North 63rd Street; Monarch Road; Niwot Road; Neva Road; U.S. 36/North Foothills Highway; Nelson Road; North 65th Street; St. Vrain Road; Hygiene Road; Colo. 66/Ute Highway; North 75th Street; North 73rd Street and 71st Street.
  • Significant detours and heavy traffic is expected on Colo. 119/Diagonal Highway, but the highway will remain open to through traffic from Boulder to Longmont. All traffic will be shifted onto travelers headed toward Longmont to allow the bike course to use the lanes headed toward Boulder.
  • North 63rd Street will be closed to vehicular traffic from Monarch Road to Colo. 119/Diagonal Highway from 6 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
  • North 75th Street will be closed to northbound vehicular traffic between Hygiene and Colo. 66 from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. Residents will be allowed to enter their neighborhoods, but no one will be permitted to access Colo. 66 from Hygiene.
  • North 71st Street will be closed to all traffic from Monarch Road to Colo. 119/Diagonal Highway from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m.
  • Niwot Road will be closed to all traffic from Colo. 119/Diagonal Highway to 71st Street from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m.
  • Monarch Road will be closed to all traffic from Colo. 119/Diagonal Highway to 71st Street from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. Access to IBM will be allowed via 71st Street to Monarch Road. There will not be access to IBM via Colo. 119.
  • Hygiene Road will be closed from U.S. 36 to 75th Street from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. Residents will be allowed to access their homes.
  • Nelson Road will be closed from 65th Street to 75th Street from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. Residents will be allowed to access their homes.
  • North 51st and 55th Streets will be closed to vehicular traffic from Jay Road to Monarch Road except to local residents between 7 a.m. to 2 p.m.
  • Boulder Reservoir will be closed all day on Friday and Saturday as well as during the afternoon Thursday.

Motorists are advised not to cross the course if possible, according to a news release. To get from one side to the other, they can use U.S. 36 and North Foothills Highway, Colo. 66/Ute Highway, Jay, Airport and Hover roads. In addition, drivers should avoid Niwot, Nelson or St. Vrain roads. These roads will remain open for residents, but delays should be expected. Law enforcement will be at all major intersections to help direct traffic.

Recreational cyclists should avoid traveling in the same direction as the riders on the bike course and avoid traveling on and across Colo. 119/Diagonal Highway between 55th Street and Oxford Road.

The IBM Connector Trail will be open to maintain cyclist access across the course on Colo. 119/Diagonal Highway. Recreational cyclists can access North 63rd Street from Niwot Road to the IBM Connector Trail, but they cannot not cross the race course at Colo. 119/Diagonal Highway.

When passing a bicyclist, motorists must allow at least 3 feet of space between their vehicle and a bicyclist. To pass a bicyclist safely, drivers may cross a double yellow center line when oncoming traffic is clear.

Beginning at noon on Thursday, Boulder Reservoir will be closed to everyone except those with an Ironman access pass. Boulder Reservoir will reopen to the public at 7 a.m. on Sunday.

All Ironman spectators must use the shuttle services to Boulder Reservoir from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday. Athletes and spectators arriving before 7 a.m. and after 2 p.m. must have a valid access pass or utilize the shuttle services.

Shuttle stop locations include:

  • Boulder High School located at 1604 Arapahoe Avenue.
  • Boulder Marriott located at 2660 Canyon Boulevard.
  • Holiday Inn Express located at 4777 North Broadway.
  • Hampton Inn Boulder North located at 6333 Lookout Road.
