By Boulder County Farmers Markets
You don’t need to change your whole life to support local food. All it takes is five. Swap five ingredients from your grocery list for locally produced food. Spend $5 on a special treat. Come by five times this season. That’s all it takes to strengthen your community and support area farms. When we all Take 5 for Local food, it adds up.
As much as we’d love to see you every weekend, we know life gets busy. We know it can be hard to make the markets on Saturday mornings between baseball practice and that birthday party you forgot about, but taking five is easy.
That’s why we’re launching the Take 5 Challenge. Commit to taking five for local food every week, and you’ll be rewarded with free BCFM swag, knowing your farmer by name and bolstering your community. This will probably be the tastiest challenge you’ve ever take.
You could swap five items from your grocery list, spend $5 on a beer in our beer garden or stock up on $5 of garlic for the winter. No time for the market? Buy five of your favorite local items in our online market every week.
When you sign up for the Take 5 Challenge you’ll win prizes and bragging rights, and your actions will be felt fields away. Sign up for the challenge at bit.ly/Take5atBCFM and you’ll get a sweet yard sign as your local food-loving badge of honor.
This week your BCFM crew will be out and about spreading sunshine with free sunflowers on Pearl Street, free pedicab rides to the Wednesday night market and games and prizes at the Take 5 booth at our Wednesday night market from 4 to 7:30 p.m. Here’s the full schedule for today:
Pearl Street flower oop-up: We will be popping up and giving away free sunflowers on the 1200 block on Pearl Street (near Ben & Jerry’s) from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Free pedicab rides to the market: We’ve hired the fine folks at Longmont Bike Taxi to give people roaming the streets of Boulder free rides to the Wednesday night market. Their three pedicabs will be wrapped in BCFM branding promoting Take 5, so wave them down for a free ride if you see them.
Take 5 launch at Boulder Wednesday Market: We’ll have a Take 5 tent at the Wednesday market, giving away swag at our Take 5 booth for market-goers who sign up to take the challenge from 4 to 7:30 p.m.

Five Ingredient Corn Salad
Everyone on the internet is excited about sweet summer corn right now, and so are we. You only need five ingredients for the deliciously simple side dish that lets the flavor and juice of local corn shine.
5 ears of corn, cut off the cob
2 cups cherry tomatoes, halved
1 small red onion, diced
1/4 cup basil, chopped
2 tablespoons oil and vinegar
Visit the market or bcfm.org to find all the ingredients you need. Grab corn from Munson Farms or Miller Farm, pick up cherry tomatoes from Rough & Ready Farm or Rocky Mountain Fresh, snag an onion from Hoffman Farms or Monroe Organic Farms, Stubborn Roots Farms or Croft Family Farm will have fragrant basil for you, and Healthy Harvest has vinegar and olive oil pressed locally to round out your grocery list.
Toss all ingredients in a large bowl and serve chilled.
